Got up, ate a bunch of spaghetti for breakfast-Thanks Lees!!-got on the bus and headed to Mt SAC. Got there, chilled for a while and cheered for some of the Weber runners.
Got my warmup started about half an hour before the race. Felt alright-knew that things would settle in during the race and didn't stress not feeling my best. Got dynamics in about 10 minutes before the race. Then I did something I normally don't do-I only did 2 strides about 5 minutes before the race. I felt good after 2 so I stuck with that. I did another short one when the race didn't start exactly on time or something but it was just to stay loose. Got in a prayer and cheer with the boys, and got on the line.
I ended up being one person back on the line for the start and far to the left where you don't want to be. This was okay, I planned on taking it easy the first mile and this would keep me in check. The gun goes off and I just stay relaxed. At the 400 I was about in 80th-100th place next to ma boi Point Dexter and he tells me to move up so I start to take heads. Still relaxed but I get into race mode. I get to the mile in 5:20, about 50th. Then we hit the switch backs, I pass a bunch of kids, but then on the downhill I just opened up my stride and passed a ton of kids. I get to the 1.5 at 8:22 right behind ma bois Kyler and Jacob Lee. I sit on Jake for a couple seconds and pass him right before the second hill and by now I'm at about 10-12th. From here my goal is get Kyler. Kyler keeps his tempo up on the back stretch, and up the last hill but on the downhill I'm able to close the gap and on the "airstrip" I pass him. This is where I should have really made a move, but I just didn't have the guts to do anything and the pack I was with was able to pass me with 150m left.
I finished in 9th, which I was happy with. I raced my race and did as well as I could expect to after a weird couple weeks of training and some aches and pains I've developed. This was probably one of my better races this season but I have some major work to do with my finish as we get into track.
Great job everybody who went to footlocker and good luck at nationals to those who qualified.
Here's to some hard earned time off.
